Budapest
August 12th - 3:24pm

After a ridiculous train ride starting before 5am with a horde of drunken, bongo drum-playing French teenagers making a ruckus on my platform and shortly thereafter, right next to my seat (blocking the bathroom, which didn't work anyway), I made it to Budapest with an address in hand. Of the Marriott. My traveling buddies David and Mariah had, in a move beyond graciousness, arranged for a bed in their room overlooking the Danube river and more castles and palaces than you'd know what to do with.We set out for a walk along the river, on the Buda side. This gate is anthropomorphic, but like the Young Girl-Old Woman illusion, the form it takes is in the eye of the beholder. (I think they're adorable.)

They were dredging the river! Giant piles of rock and silt were being moved a few feet closer to shore, and then dumped back in. I'm tempted to say something about Communist-era Sisyphysian futility, but the reality is, as I've said before, that's why I'm not an urban hydrodynamicist.

Budapest's Parliament, on the Pest side. A more industrious tourist would have insisted on taking a tour, but I was satisfied by it being part of my view.

The view from basically in front of the Marriott, on the walk back from Pozsonyi Kisvendéglő, one of my most favorite restaurants in Europe (dinner for three, including jokai bableves soup, cow marrow on toast, three giant entrees of various pounded and fried things covered in cheese, and maybe a gallon of beer came to $60).

This little joker was seated next to the trolley line, oblivious to life passing him by. Next to him, a bronze sculpture.

The next day, David and I set out to the municipal baths for hydrotherapy and, in my case, a medical massage. Trials put in our way by the Bath Gods included this traffic free-for-all.

Trial Two: they're popping out of the fresco and demanding to be deoxidized! The solution is, you go to the water baths and they go to the calcium hexaboride baths.

On the final morning, bidding Europe farewell. The previous night, we had returned to the same restaurant and were seated on the hot, smoky second floor, and they were out of the preferred draft beer (Arony Aszok). Oh well!I didn't take nearly as many photos in Budapest as I did elsewhere along the journey, but, you know, I needed a vacation.Hope you've enjoyed!
